“Community ESL” teaches 28 words that students need to know for their life in the local community. The words are presented in five groups: “Fun vehicles” shows items for travel that are not usual transportation vehicles (a bicycle, a sailboat, a skateboard, a snowmobile, a wagon and rollerblades). “Getting around” presents more standard methods of transportation (a bus, a motorcycle, a taxi, a train, and an airplane). “People in the community” include a cashier, a crossing guard, a doctor, a firefighter, a letter carrier and a veterinarian. “Places in the community” are a gas station, a pizzeria, a shopping plaza, an apartment building and the hospital. “Working vehicles” are a cement truck, a delivery van, a firetruck, a garbage truck, a tow truck and a tractor-trailer.
Of course there are many other words to be learned about life in the community. Ask a member of your community if you need to know a particular word.
This suite of eight user-friendly apps is intended to introduce vocabulary to students who are learning English.
In all activities in each app, students will see a graphic, read the English word, and hear the word spoken by an accomplished teacher. Students are invited to participate in four activities: "Lets learn" (words are repeated with ample time for the student to practice saying them); "Lets practice" (a drag and drop activity matching printed words with pictures); "Lets play" (a game in which students match graphics and sound); and "Quiz" (students must choose the correct picture for a written and spoken word). Even young students who do not yet read will be able to use all activities because the sound is always attached to graphics and word boxes.
